Lankan fined for possession of unauthorized gems, jewellery Custom Officials imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 on a Sri Lankan passenger for non declaration of Gems and Jewellery valued at Rs. 1,61,135.00 which was forfeited after an inquiry. The suspect was later released after payment of the fine, a spokesman for Sri Lankan Customs told the Sunday Observer last Friday. The passenger who arrived at the Bandaranike International Airport around 11.30. on a flight from Hong Kong had gone past the "Green Channel" without declaring the gold and jewellery. However on suspicion, Customs officers searched him and found the haul of gems and jewellery in his baggage and his trouser pocket. The detection was made by Customs officer M. W. Tissera, P. I. Udaya and A. Priyantha under the direction of Supdt, of Custmos J. H. Hemachandra. The inquiry was held by Asst, Director Customs, Duminda Jayaratne. (JJ) |
