More leave for greener pastures in Korea by Ananda Kannangara In an effort to expedite the provision of overseas employment opportunities to Sri Lankan workers during the next six months, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) will send a batch of 160 Lankan skilled workers to the Republic of Korea tomorrow. The Lankan workers, considered to be the very first batch, leaving the country for overseas employment in the New Year, will be accorded a special reception by Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratne at the Bureau Head office in Battaramulla tomorrow morning. The recipients will also be provided with air tickets to coincide with the occasion. It is said that the workers have been granted jobs under the Korean - Sri Lanka Employment Agreement (KSEA), signed last year by Sri Lankan Labour Minister and his Korean counterpart Kin Dae Hwan. Minister Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer that under the agreement nearly 4,000 Lankan youth have so far found jobs in the Republic and another 5,000 will get an opportunity to be employed in that country within the next two years. At a recent meeting held in Colombo between the labour ministers of both countries, it was revealed that among the five countries that provide youth for the Korean job market, Sri Lanka has reached the top, considering the number of Lankan workers currently engaged in numerous jobs in that country. |
