ANCL Catholics support the needy

by Karunadasa Widanagamage

The ANCL Catholic Solidarity continuing its Christmas Support Project for Children, for the seventh consecutive year went all the way to Polonnaruwa to share the Christmas joy and treat 200 poor rural children with funds raised through the generous support from the Solidarity members, non members, administrative staff, the public and Private sector institutions.

The Christmas celebrations this year coincided with the Catechetical Day of the Polonnaruwa District and the participation of Buddhist monks and Buddhist children at the Christmas celebrations held at the 'Dhawala Mandiraya' added colour to the occasion. Their presence manifested religious harmony, for which the country yearns right now.

The Catholic children attended the Holy Mass offered at the Mary Immaculate Church offered by Rev. Fr. Lasantha Abrew SJ the Parish Priest of the tiny Catholic Mission. The children represented Dhahampasalas at Maduruoya Kuda Madhu Church,Alawathukumbura St. Sebastian Church and Bendiwewa 'Mother of Good Health' along with Buddhist children from Bendiwewa Sri Shantha Dahampasala and Kadalawewa Saddhathissa Dhaham Pasala.

Ven. Peradeniye Shashanarathana Thera and Ven. Aralaganwila Somawansa Thera joined the Catholic priests to mark the occasion.

The Buddhist and Catholic children staged plays entertaining the audience.

The Catholic children re-lived the story of 'Annunciation' and the 'Nativity' on stage. The Solidarity appreciating the dedicated work of the Catholic and Buddhist Daham teachers presented them with gifts.

The event was organised by Rev. Fr. Lasantha Abrew SJ, Parish Priest of the Church dedicated to Mary Immaculate at Polonnaruwa.

Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University Rev Fr. (Prof.) Guy Rajendran SJ was the chief guest.
