ICTAD an authority soon

by Elmo Leonard

The long awaited decree to convert the Institute for Construction Training and Development - ICTAD into an authority is in the stage of the legal draughtsman. When implemented, the succeeding Construction Industry Authority will have the authorisation to promote the growth and effectiveness of the domestic construction industry, ICTAD director general, J K Lankatilake said.

The proposed body, could then regulate the powers and functions of the industry and standardise its activities and procedures.

Lankatilake thanked all professionals, professional associations, the National Construction Association of Sri Lanka and the Chamber of Construction Industry for the assistance received.

He was addressing the 'ICTAD Construction Excellence Awards Ceremony 2005' recently. Minister of Housing and Construction, Ferial Ashraff commended the construction industry for its achievements in recent years.

She said the industry played a vital role in the economy of the nation.

The process of setting up the awards scheme was to honour and reward construction contractors and all others involved in the field of construction industry and encourage them to reach greater heights. She commended the rating of construction contractors and called for the rating to also include all sectors of the construction industry.

Director ICTAD, K P W Rajasiri said that while much had been done to improve the construction industry, much more had to be done. It was towards the continuous improvement of the construction industry, that ICTAD had introduced the system of rating of stakeholders.

ICTAD's evaluation process for rating was more focused towards customer care, organisational leadership, work systems, human resources development and performance results, Rajasiri said.

Rating would become a driving force for continuous improvement due to its very nature and ability to achieve a competitive edge and create a significant market force through demand.
