Friends fly off

New Year's Eve night belonged to the musicians... Almost all bands in the industry were on the band stands in Colombo, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya the Southern circuit and the Negombo circuit. Even small restaurants ensured that their revellers went home happy after dancing and singing lustily to the traditional Auld Lange Syne.

Friends in action

The day after New Year we met Nihar Hamid leader of Friends to find out how it was with his band who was featured at the Ballroom of Taj Samudra.

"It was a successful 31st night. The Ballroom was packed with guests, most of the Sri Lankans from Australia and England who were extremely happy to be back in Sri Lanka and to be with members of their families they left behind, friends and relatives.

It was a memorable re-union for them, happiness untold. As for us, our music was well received - the guests were a mixed lot-young and old. We played a different scene and kept them on their feet until the stroke of midnight and even after. Enthusiasm and energy ran high and watching them from my drum stool it was evident that coming back to their homeland was a special kind of happiness", Nihar describes the evening.

The band Friends who were featured at The Mix on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays will be leaving Sri Lanka on Wednesday January 11 and looking forward to a return this year for the festive season.

With his band of men the bassist Ushan Gunasekera, the keyboardist Dileepa Mangala the guitarist Marlon Amarasekera and the female glitz Gaby who is fluent in five different European languages, English and now sings baila in Sinhala, Nihar and Friends will be in Zurich till end of March, then to Germany and back to Switzerland, to cover gigs.
