Rebels for
secret vote at UNP Ex. Co
by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The United National Party (UNP) dissident group has decided to call for a secret vote at the next Executive Committee meeting or Parliamentary group meeting to introduce reforms to the party. The UNP rebels who are hellbent on ousting leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided so, as Wickremesinghe is dragging the implementation of reforms indefinitely giving excuses. The rebels have realised that Wickremesinghe is taking time to diffuse the threat against his leadership. They have decided to call for a secret vote at the Executive Committee meeting on reforms scheduled for coming Tuesday or at the next parliamentary group meeting. Though Wickremesinghe has promised party seniors that he would bring drastic changes to give a new face to the party, rebels claimed that Wickremesinghe would try to fill vacancies with his men. A rebel leader told the Sunday Observer that they wanted to enthrone Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya in the leadership as a majority of the party men believe that only Jayasuriya who has a Sinhal Buddhist background can challenge President Mahinda Rajapakse at coming elections. But sources said that Wickremesinghe loyalists are regrouping to diffuse the rebel voice in the party in order to save the leadership for Wickremesinghe. |
