Eight
juniors attend two-week training camp in Perth
by Lal Gunesekera Eight top junior tennis players (four boys and four girls) plus two coaches left the island last Monday to attend a two-week training camp in Perth, Australia courtesy of the Margaret Court Foundation and also to witness the Hopman Cup, which is a team event featuring most of the Grand Slam winners. Among the four girls is the 14-year-old national champion Jithmi Jayawickreme of Bishop's College, while the others are; Yasodhara Karunaratne of Colombo International School (CIS), Dinukshi Kirthisinghe the No. 6 ranked player in under-14 from Ave Maria Convent in Negombo and Sachini Iddamalgoda, the No. 7 ranked under-14 player from Newstead BMV, Negombo. The four boys comprises: Upasama Artha of Lyceum International School who is ranked No. 3 in the under-16, Michael Siyaguna of CIS who is ranked No. 5 in the under-16, Amaresh Jayawickreme of S. Thomas' Prep, Kollupitiya the No. 7 ranked player, and Aravind Fernando the sixth ranked player in the under-14 age group who is the son of former national champion and Davis Cup veteran Arjun Fernando. The eight players were accompanied by the younger brother of the SLTA chief Ganendra Subramaniam and the SLTA's National Co-ordinator for Junior Tennis, Barathiraj Pillai. SLTA's spokesman said that they were fortunate to have been offered this scholarship by the Margeret Court Foundation, who are meeting all the expenses of the 10 members, including air tickets, accommodation, meals and training classes. He said that the SLTA hopes that the Foundation will offer scholarships on an annual basis and that the players were chosen on the basis of what Margaret Court saw during her visit to Sri Lanka last year. |
