Lankans compete with England, Australia

by Lal Gunesekera

Sri Lanka are in Pool 'C' with the third seeded England and home town favourites Australia and the Cook Islands for the Rugby 7s at the Commonwealth Games to be staged in Melbourne, Australia in March.

Top seeds New Zealand coached by Gordon Teitjens won its sixth consecutive IRB 7s series last season and are defending the title won in Manchester, England. They are in Pool 'A' with Kenya, Wales and Namibia.

2005 Rugby World Cup (RWC) 7s and World Games champions Fiji, who won the silver medal in Manchester in 2002, are seeded No. 2 and are in pool 'B' with Scotland, Canada and Zambia. Fijians pipped England to second spot in the 2004-05 IRB 7s series.

South Africa heads Group 'D'. They completed the 2004-05 IRB 7s series strongly with victory at Twickenham, London and providing tough opposition to South Africa in Group 'D' are John Schuster's Samoan outfit together with Tonga and Uganda.

The seedings for Melbourne was determined by the most recent IRB 7s rankings in the 2004-05 season. Thus, New Zealand are the top seeds, followed by Fiji, England, South Africa, Samoa, Australia, Scotland and Kenya.

Further, there are six IRB 7s series events for the year. They are at Wellington on February 3 and 4, Los Angeles on February 11 and 12, Hong Kong on March 31, April 1 and 2, Singapore on April 8 and 9, Paris on May 27 and 28 and London on June 3 and 4.
