Three die in
revolt-hit Nepal
KATHMANDU - Two Nepali policemen and a Maoist rebel died in separate clashes Friday, the army said, heightening concern about an upsurge in violence following the end to a ceasefire earlier this week. The deaths came as a leading Nepal human rights group called for a new truce to avert "a big loss of life" in the impoverished nation where King Gyanendra seized power in February in what he said was a bid to stem the insurgency. The two policemen were slain and two others injured in a Maoist attack in Bairahawa in southwestern Nepal, said an army official who asked not to be identified. The rebel was killed in Rauthat district, south of Kathmandu. The deaths brought to six the number of insurgency-related killings in 24 hours following the end to the four-month unilateral ceasefire called off by the rebels Monday in the Himalayan kingdom. On Thursday, three policemen were slain Thursday in a battle with rebels. |
