Several
'foundations' with little use - Mahanayaka Thera
Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera of the Malwatte Mahavihara Chapter observed that there were a large number of 'foundations' operating in the country under various names but most of them were upto various corrupt practices and hardly anything was done by them for the benefit of suffering masses who were in need of assistance. As a result of that state of affairs people hesitate to help those organisations formed with honest and sincere motive of providing assistance to needy people, he added. The prelate made those observations at the first anniversary meeting of the "Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Human Solidarity Foundation" of Malwatta Mahaviharaya. The event took place at the Sri Sangharaja Pirivena Hall, Malwatta Viharaya, Kandy. Most Ven. Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera added those people of affluent class should not spend money on antisocial activities. They should realise that they were not going to live for ever. They should, in their lifetime should make contributions from their wealth towards uplift the living standards of poor people. It may not possible to alleviate poverty but it would be possible to minimise poverty. There were some people of some means but were reluctant to help others. They might be thinking that helping the poor and their living standards uplifted they, the former, would lose their respect by minimising the social differences between them. Unless they got relieved of such thoughts they would never achieve consolation in their life. During past one year houses had been provided to 2 poor families. Scholarships had been awarded to needy schoolchildren and many other programmes to help the poor without any discrimination against any ethnic, religious or social groups. Only human requirements were taken into consideration in providing those assistance by Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Human Solidarity Foundation, added most Ven. Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera. On this occasion a 3-acre land was donated to the organisation by G. H. M. Punchi Banda of Anuradhapura, scholarships were awarded to needy students from Tennelanda, Rattota and Kawudagammana schools. Most Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Anunayaka Thera Central Province Governor
