No harassment, Minister assures media

by Thava Sajitharan

Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa last week gave assurance that due measures would be taken to stop intimidations and harassments against Journalists.

There were numerous reports particularly in the Tamil newspapers over the last weeks alleging that Tamil journalists were harassed on many occasions by security officers and grilled for no reason. Many journalists were reported to have been detained at police custody even after presenting the media accreditation card issued by the Government Information Department.

Responding to a question at the weekly cabinet briefing at the Information Department held last Thursday, Minister Yapa said that he had a meeting with the editors of Tamil newspapers and senior journalists where representatives of Police and Army were also present. 'Problems faced by them were discussed in detail' the Minister said.
