Kandy car
park tariff irks shop owners
by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The newly built Kandy car park management has been handed over to a private company recently after a considerable delay. Now, the latest is business owners on the town have come on to the streets against the newly adjusted parking charges by the company. Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) had earlier planned to run the car park by themselves, but later they decided to give it to a contractor realising the unexpected cost on wages, electricity, security and other maintenance. To add to that burden the KMC should also settle the loan which they had taken from the Asian Development Bank for the project. According to the Kandy Mayor's Office sources the four storeyed car park provides parking space for around 890 vehicles and they have taken Rs. 700 million from the ADB. 'Even KMC's budget has been presented depending on the income from the car park. The MC receives only Rs. 2.8m monthly in terms or the contract with the Property Finance and Investments Kandy (Pvt) Ltd. According to the new tariff levied by the contracting company it is Rs. 11.50 for each of the first two hours for light vehicles within the car park. For a vehicle parked on a street it is Rs. 23 for the first hour and Rs. 57 for each additional hours. For heavy vehicles Rs. 34 for each hour in Colombo street. But all the other street vehicle owners have to pay Rs. 57 for the first hour and Rs. 86 for additional hour. |
