Ten schoolboy 'pacies' for further training

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

Ten schoolboy 'pacies' from the Central Region have been selected for further training after talent hunt organised by the Asian Cricket Academy (ACA) and held at the Asgiriya Cricket Stadium in Kandy recently.

This talent search programme which was of one day's duration covered the Central Region and of the ten pacies selected five were Trinity College namely Arinde Bulunuwewa, Mohemmed Shazeer, R. Kumarawel, Rajitha Bandara, and S. R. Ameran. The other five young pacies were from K. M. Chaminda Bandara (St. Mary's College, Kegalle), Nandana Namal (Wickramabahu National School, Gampola), N. D. B. Nishantha (Yatiyantota MMV) and D. N. M. R. Dissanayake (Galagedera MMV).

But it is surprising that there were no nominees from leading schools from Kandy such as St. Anthony's College, St. Sylvestors College, Kingswood College, Vidyartha College, Kegalu Vidyalaya, Sri Sumangala College, Sri Rahula College and Dharmaraja College which is famous for producing fast bowlers in the past. This is something both the ACA and the schools should look into with a view of providing the best for further training.

The selected pacies will be provided with further training and will come under the scrutiny of 'Dartfish' technology in which the bowlers actions, styles which were videoed during the camp will be viewed in a large screen with a view of correcting them and also help them to improve their skills.

Dart Fish Technology was used once before at the university grounds, Peradeniya by Sri Lanka Cricket at a coaching camp held under the guidance of Manager Coaching Malcolm Perera, Hemantha Devapriya and 'A' team coach Neil and Anusha Samaranayake.

The present programme it is understood is headed by former Sri Lanka pacie Rumesh Ratnayake, Brendon Kuruppu, Sajeewa de Silva and assisted by Anusha Samaranayake and Neil Rajapakse. It is also understood that similar coaching camps will be held in the other provinces and around 70 will be selected at national level and this will be shortlisted to 10 who will be provided with one year's training.

This programme is sponsored by Stafford Motors Ltd.
