Lanka's tea production for 2005 - an all-time record Sri Lanka's tea production for 2005 at 317.1 million kilograms, is an all-time record harvest for a calendar year and betters the 310 million kilos produced during 2002, according to the Forbes and Walker tea brokers report. Production for 2005 records a gain of 9.11 million kilos, compared with the 308 million kilos produced during 2004. For around a decade, there has been a general increase in the island's tea production, with the exception of 2003, when the tea yield dipped marginally to 303.2 million kilos. In 2001, the production of tea was 295.0 million kilos. For 2004, the main growth sector has been high grown teas, with production being 79.3 million kilos, a growth of 4.8 million kilos over that of 2004. Medium grown teas for 2005, also reflect a growth of 4.6 million kilos over 2004, climbing to 54.3 million kilos during the year. Low grown production for 2005 shows a decline 2.76 million kilos, compared to 183 million kilos produced in 2004. A significant factor when analysing the low grown production has been the substantial increase in production of low grown CTCs. Low grown CTC production records a substantial growth of 23.39 percent YoY in 2005 vis-a-vis a negative growth 3.48 in orthodox low grown production during the year. When assessing the contribution from the high, medium and low grown sectors, the low grown quarter remains the dominant contributor to the total production during the year. Low grown production constitutes approximately 57 percent of tea produced during 2005. |
