Red Crescent to build 1,250 houses for tsunami victims by Gamini Warushamana Red Crescent, a non-governmental organisation in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) will build 1,250 houses for tsunami-affected people in the South and the East. The agreement for the rebuilding community infrastructure and shelters was signed between Red Crescent and the implementing agency, UN Habitat last Monday at the UAE ambassador's residence. Four-hundred houses will be constructed in Khalifa Pura in the Galle district at a cost of US$ 1,253,505. Another 850 houses will be constructed in the Ampara district at a cost of US$ 3,253,505. Construction work will be completed within 12 months. The money was donated by people in the UAE after the tsunami devastation a year ago. The money was with us and the project was behind schedule due to non-availability of land. The lands have now been cleared and we can proceed with the construction, Director, Red Crescent Abdulla Mohammed told the Sunday Observer. After the tsunami UAE Red Crescent sent relief assistance worth US$ 11 million promptly to Sri Lanka including food, medicine and tents. Abdulla said that UAE Red Crescent has experience in similar projects and hopes to complete the project within the scheduled timeframe and provide quality shelter for needy people. "We have carried out similar projects in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan", he said. |
