HRC claims over 200 HR violations in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Workers' United Front has made a resolution at its executive committee meeting to stage a protest tomorrow opposite the Indian High Commission condemning Indian High commissioner's attempts to persuade Ceylon Workers Congress to join the government.

This was disclosed by the party general secretary and a former parliamentarian S.Sathasivam. He said: we vehemently condemn the attempts of the Indian High Commissioner to persuade the CWC to join the government. CWC is a party that hoarded resources meant for the plantation community and cheated them. (Virakesari (VK) - 24/01)

Tamil organizations functioning in the USA have expressed vehement condemnation of US Ambassador for Sri Lanka Jeffrey Lunstead's recent speech condemning the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

A joint statement issued by 12 organizations in the USA said: it is pitiable that the American ambassador has made remarks in support of the Sri Lankan government threatening the LTTE. His speech would cause harm to the peace efforts. (VK - 24/01)

The Tamil National Alliance representatives met with the Norway International Development Minister Erik Solheim last Monday and apprised him of the prevailing situation in the north and the east.

The TNA MPs led by the party parliamentary group leader R.Sambanthan explained to Mr. Solheim about the killing and intimidation allegedly carried out by the army and the paramilitary groups. (Thinakural (TK) - 25/01)

'Killing of the SudarOli(a Tamil daily)'s Trincomalee reporter Sujirtharajan is by no means pardonable and highly condemnable' says a statement issued by the TNA Jaffna district parliamentarian M.K.Sivajilingam with regard to the murder that took place yesterday morning. (TK - 25/01)

Minister A. H. M. Fouzi says that the request of the three Muslim parties that met with the Norway Minister Erik Solheim to grant Muslims a separate role in the potential talks is mischievous act.

Mr.Solheim held separate talks with Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, All Ceylon Muslim Congress and National United Alliance yesterday. During these talks the above parties have requested for separate Muslim participation in the talks between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.

However Solheim reiterated his stance that it was up to the government and the LTTE to arrive at a final decision on the issue.

'It is deplorable that these parties, having achieved no feat after meeting with Solheim pretend and express views to the media as if they had done great things.

The international community has become aware of the weakness of the Muslim parties in Sri Lanka' the Minister said. (TK - 25/01)

Yesterday, President Mahinda Rajapakse held talks with the Managing Directors and the Editors of Tamil newspapers. President Rajapakse ordered the Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando that journalists who get arrested on suspicion during search operations should be handed over to the company management concerned if they possess the media accreditation card issued by the government information department. (TK - 26/01)
