Thirty years of excellence in dancing

by Ranga Chandrarathne

The thirtieth anniversary of Chamara Kalayatanaya of Rajini Selvanayagam, famous teacher of dancing, will be held at 5.00 p.m. on January 28 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. Felicitation of nine artists who have dedicated their lives for the propagation and sustenance of this unique form of art will be held to coincide with the 30th anniversary celebrations.

Padmini Ariyadasa (Kalashuri), Piyasara Shilpadhipathy (Kalashuri), Kulasiri Buddhawatte (Teacher of dancing), Jayasena Kottegoda (Kirthisri), Ariyarathne Kaluarachchi (Lecturer), Prof.Mudiyanse Dissanayaka, Vasugi Jegdeshvaran (Kalashuri), Channa Wijewardena (Kalashuri) and Ravibandu Vidyapathi (Dramatist) will be felicitated in recognition of their life long service rendered, and contributions made to the preservation and propagation of indigenous dance traditions.

Chamara Kalayatanaya has taught over 51,000 students and offer classes for GCE O/L and GCE A/L, in addition to offering courses for Indigenous traditional dance forms of upcountry and low country dancing as well as Barathanatyam under a staff of professional teachers of dancing headed by Rajini Selvanayagam.

Professionals such as doctors, lawyers, accountants and engineers are some of the distinguished old students of the Institute with a rare sense of artistic appreciation and have not forgotten dancing. Some of those students though professionals, still enjoy dancing and look back with a sense of respect on the institute and the diverse forms of dancing traditions they learnt.

The institute holds an annual talent concert for the benefit of their students and so far 46 such concerts had been held over the last 30 years.

Students always take part in national events such as Independence Day Celebrations and various national sports meets in addition to films and tele-dramas.

Rajini Selvanayagam is proud of the students of Chamara Kalayatanaya who have successfully concluded their studies at the Institute and are gainfully employed in Government schools as teachers of dancing as well as those who are employed at private institutions here and abroad, contributing immensely to the propagation of dancing around the world.

The Chamara Kalayatanaya, which was founded on February 5, 1975 as a small classroom, is aimed at building a just society promoting culture, tradition and customs through the art of dancing.
