EU Ambassador to turn marriage counsellor

by Elmo Leonard

Both sides want peace, was how ambassador of the European Commission to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Julian Wilson figured out, referring to last week's agreement by the LTTE to stop violence and sit down to talks.

Through December and January, there had been a lot of violence, Wilson observed. The envoy thought aloud that the government and LTTE apart, the people and the business community in particular, had a major role to play in the continuance of peace, by developing the country. Ambassador Wilson made these observations at the 47th AGM of the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka.

The problems the people of the north and east of the island face were more real, than that which the people in the south were aware of, Wilson said. He was optimistic of the chances of a peaceful agreement to the conflict.

A fourth of Sri Lanka's trade is with the 25 member EU member states and ambassador Wilson said that he would do all he could, to bring the private sectors of the two nations together.

"My job is that of a marriage counsellor," he said.
