Lust leads to murder

Crime Sunday by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

It is like reading one of those spine chilling stories that we often find in novels where people indulging in extramarital sex, lust and the greed to possess material wealth by crooked means often ends up in misery. In reality too we come across such harrowing stories in the newspapers quite often.

Last week's gruesome murder in a village off Kahathuduwa at Salgas Junction is a case in point where a man in his mid fifties was hacked to death with a sword by a young man in the presence of his wife.

A police party led by OIC Crimes Piliyandala Inspector Kirilella broke into the deserted house situated in a large estate and found the partly charred body of a man in a highly decomposed state. The discovery was made almost a week after he was murdered. Police subsequently learnt the dead man's body was that of the husband of the woman that accompanied the killers after the murder.

Police are investigating why the woman did not complain to the police about the killing of her husband. She later made up a story to say that she was abducted by the killers who threatened to kill her if she revealed any thing to the police. But the police say that it is far from the truth.

An investigation has been launched whether she worked hand in glove with the killers. The woman it seems had pretended as nothing had happened until she was arrested. According to OIC Crimes Kahathuduwa, Inspector Kiriella they have found evidence to most puzzling questions. The married woman (53) had a promiscuous affair with the young boy (19) staying with them at Salgas junction Kahathuduwa.

Profile

She was a wealthy woman who owned property in Kahathuduwa. This was her second marriage. After she divorced her first husband she was involved with a man (57) who came to reside in her house.

He was a Karate expert but a jobless man whom she married later. But life certainly wasn't a bed of roses for them. They often quarrelled over petty things.

Things however went from bad to worse when a young man from Welimada moved in there almost one and a half years ago. He was employed at a carpentry shop at Boralesgamuwa. Soon the woman started a secret affair with him. Police have found evidence that the woman was in the habit of viewing lewd films with the young boy at home.

However over a period of time their lives became entwined. "Sensual pleasure was quite evident from the way they have been together", police said. Whether the woman really planned the murder of her husband with the young man is being thoroughly investigated.

The killing took place on January 13 at their home. As usual the couple went to bed around 9.00 p.m. after dinner. Around 2.00 a.m. the young man occupying a rear room of the house was heard groaning in pain and was complaining that he was not well.

He urged somebody to open the door to get some Panadol tablets. No sooner the woman's husband opened the door, a man armed with a pistol forced his way in to the house.

Robbery

The robber demanded his wife's jewellery and cash and threatened to kill him if he does not act quickly. Instantaneously the husband swung into action and hurled a kick at the robber and the pistol was thrown away. At this stage the husband ran inside his bedroom and brought a long sword to attack the robber. While attempting to attack the robber, the young man and the robber grappled with him and snatched away his sword.

The robber then held the sword and chopped the husband repeatedly till he fell unconscious on the ground. He was now lying in a pool of blood.

They dragged his body to another room and left him there. The two men then quickly collected the Savings Pass Books where his wife had deposited several lakhs of rupees from the sale of property, several title deeds, gold jewellery, and left with the woman in her own vehicle in the wee hours of the morning.

They headed straight to Welimada where they picked up another person known to the robber. Thereafter the four of them drove to Kegalle where they spent two days at a guest house. During the next few days they had visited Ratnapura, Wellawaya and Sella Katharagama where they performed a pansakulaya for the dead man.

On the 17th January they arrived at a bank at Kottawa where the woman had an account and withdrew Rs. 20 lakhs which she gave the robber. Even at this stage the woman had not intimated anything to the Bank officials. She never complained that she was forced to withdraw the money by the robbers.

After collecting the money the four of them left to Rathgama where they stayed at the robber's relatives house. While staying at the Ratgama, the robber had told his young relative and the boy who was at the Kahathuduwa house to get back to kahathuduwa and burn the body.

Accordingly the two young men got to a petrol filling station close by, collected a few litres of petrol and boarded a bus going in the direction of Kahathuduwa. After arriving at the house at Kahathuduwa they doused the highly decomposed body with petrol and set it on fire.

When the two young boys got back to Ratgama, the inmates of the house queried about what they have been up to and learnt what had happened.

Tip off

On a tip off to Rathgama police a police party led by Sub-Inspector Wijesena arrested the woman, the robber and the two young men involved in the affair. Later they were handed over to Kahathuduwa police for further investigation.

Kahathuduwa police have found out that the robber who attacked and killed the man with the help of the young man was a Island Reconvicted Criminal (IRC) who had served a jail term for ten years and was released from Jail only two months ago. It was subsequently learnt the young man at the Kahathuduwa residence had travelled to Welimada and assigned the job to the IRC to kill the woman's husband.

All suspects allegedly involved in the murder were produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate Mapa Bandara who remanded them till inquiries are completed.
