Death of Schafik Handal Schafik Jorge Handal, a senior leader of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) of EI Salvador died of a heart attack last Tuesday, January 24. He fainted at the airport on his return from Bolivia after attending the inauguration of President Evo Morales. He was 75. Between 1959 and 1994 he was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of EI Salvador and a guerilla leader in the late Seventies. In 1980 he became a leader of the FMLN after the Communist Party and four other political forces united under the name FMLN. Following the Chapultepec Peace Accords in 1992 the FMLN was converted into a political party and Handal became its coordinator. He was the leader of the FMLN Group in the EI Salvador Legislative Assembly. In 2004 he contested the Presidential elections but was unsuccessful. The United States interfered in the elections openly declaring that relations with the United States would be severely affected if Handal wins. Funeral will take place today, Sunday January 22 in the Salvadorean capital. |
