SLMC to go it alone by Thava Sajitharan The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is likely to contest the upcoming local polls on its own, according to party sources. SLMC National organiser and parliamentarian K. A. Baiz told the Sunday Observer that the majority of the members of SLMC held that the party should contest the election on its own. The local polls to elect members for municipal and urban councils and pradeshiya sabhas are scheduled to be held in mid April. The Elections Secretariat last week announced that nominations and deposits to contest the polls for registered parties will be received from February 9 to February 16 noon. The SLMC national organiser, however, noted that they were yet to arrive at a final decision on the matter. "Discussions are going on and views of representatives from various parts of the country are being considered" Baiz said. "We have received invitations from both the UNP and the PA to contest together" he added."Our decision will be finalised before February 3", he said. Meanwhile the All Ceylon Muslim Congress said yesterday that it too was yet to take a final decision. Y. L. S. Hameed, Secretary General of the party said that they hoped to meet the Sri Lanka Freedom Party soon in this regard. "Probability is that we will contest the poll with SLFP outside the North-East. In the North-East we might contest alone" said Hameed. "However, so far no concrete decision has been taken". |
