UNP happy talks commence by Ananda Kannangara The UNP on Friday welcomed the decision taken by the Government and the LTTE to commence the stalled peace talks. In an interview with the Sunday Observer, UNP Assistant General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that the CFA, which was signed by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe with the LTTE in 2003 had brought fruitful results to the people in the country and its economy. He said that not only a majority or Sri Lankans but also the international community including the USA, India, Japan, Norway and the United Kingdom highly appreciated the signing of a Ceasefire Agreement with the LTTE in order to end unnecessary killings and other unlawful activities occurred in the Northern and Eastern districts for nearly two decades. Attanayake also said that it was happy to note the Government of Mahinda Rajapakse, the LTTE and the International community have now agreed to commence talks in Geneva. Commenting on the decision taken by the UNP on its two members Mahinda Samarasinghe and Keheliya Rambukwella who crossed over to the Government recently, Attanayaka said that these members should have taken a decision in the manner, the Kalutara District UNP MP Tilak Karunaratna who informed the party prior to his departure and formed the "Sihala Urumaya". "However the UNP Working Committee will appoint a disciplinary committee to conduct an inquiry into this," he added. |
