Moves afoot to divide SLFP by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The United National Party (UNP) will invite Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members to its fold as a tit for tat exercise since the Government has given ministerial portfolios to its members. "Since the Government is trying to divide the UNP we will divide the SLFP by inviting President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to join hands with us to resurrect the defunct United National Front", Matara District UNP MP Mahinda Wijesekara told the Sunday Observer yesterday. Re-organising the UNF is the only remedy for the UNP to come to power. Most of the time alliances have ruled the country. Therefore, we will reorganise the UNF inviting the SLFP leadership, he noted. When asked whether what assurance the UNP has that Mrs. Kumaratunga will join the UNF, Wijesekara said that there were clashes within the SLFP. "She has been taken to courts and there are disputes over the land given to her. Therefore, we can seek her support to reorganise the UNF", he said. When asked how the UNP was going to face the Local Government election, Wijesekara said "We are in a very weak position after the defeat from the last Presidential Election. We need to work hard at the coming election". Wijesekara also noted that the reforms accepted by leader Ranil Wickremesinghe were not up to the expectations of the reformist group. |
