LTTE boycotts local polls by Ranga Jayasuriya The LTTE plans to boycott the local government elections in the North-East and LTTE proxy Tamil National Alliance will make a statement this week on the election boycott, LTTE sources told the Sunday Observer. "We don't think the atmosphere in our areas is conducive to hold elections," the LTTE source said adding its leadership has informed the TNA of its decision. He said the "sensible option" would be to postpone the polls in the North-East, failing which the election would be boycotted in the North-East. He said the TNA would this week make a statement on the elections. He ruled out media reports that the LTTE would contest the election. TNA MP Surest Premachandra said his party would announce its decision tomorrow after consulting the LTTE political leadership. The Elections Commissioner's Department last week announced that nominations for over 300 local government institutions island wide - Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas - would be received between February 9-16. The Supreme Court earlier ruled that fresh nominations could be called for the North-East local government elections which had been repeatedly postponed on the request of the then TULF, which cited that the volatile security situation was not conducive to hold elections. |
