Dialog GSM powers 12th National Sport Festival for the Disabled 2006

Dialog GSM has undertaken to sponsor the 12th National Sports Festival for the Disabled. This marks the fourth time that Dialog has stepped forward to support this festival.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Jeevan Kumaranatunga said "I would like to thank Dialog GSM for coming forward to uplift sport in Sri Lanka, especially sports of this nature.

Their support has helped train our disabled athletes so that they can compete at an international level. I would like to thank Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya and his team. This is the fourth year that the company has sponsored this festival. The commitment has been a big boost for our disabled sports men and women."

Organised by the National Federation of Sports for Disabled, the 12th National Sports Festival for the Disabled 2006 began on 21st January and ends on the 24th February 2006.

During the time spectators and supporters will witness talented disabled sportsmen and women participating in 12 events, including track and field, swimming, archery, wheelchair tennis, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, weightlifting, amputee soccer, wheelchair marathon and marksmanship. Lt. Col. Rajeeva Wickramasinghe, President National Federation of Sports for the Disabled emphasised the importance of this festival from a national perspective.

"This is the only sports festival for the disabled that is held at a national level in Sri Lanka. We would like to thank Dialog GSM for coming in as a sponsor for this event. Sponsorships like theirs help raise disabled sports to the same level as that of other local sports, in the eyes of the media, the public and most importantly the participants themselves."

Nushad Perera, General Manager, Sales and Marketing of Dialog GSM said, "We take great pride in promoting and supporting sports in Sri Lanka. It is rewarding to be able to be part of this sports festival. For six years now, we have been consistent supporters of disabled sports.

We hope this sponsorship will succeed in transforming and elevating the profile of handicapped sports in this country and also in motivating those courageous individuals who have broken all barriers in reaching performance excellence in their respective field, to compete at national and international levels."

Dialog GSM has been a prominent sponsor of Sri Lankan Sports and is committed to developing talent in Sri Lanka to international standards.

The company is closely associated with school cricket, athletics, rugby, volleyball, football and rowing and has sponsored national contingents to international events including the Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian games, Asian Athletic Championships and SAF Games.
