Kandy Sports Club in top form by Lal Gunesekera Sri Lanka's glamour boys of the rugby arena, Kandy Sports Club, won all three games of Group 'A' of Tier 1 at the Singer Professional Rugby 7's at Longden Place yesterday. Kandy beat CH & FC 'B' 43-0, Police 'A' 45-5 and Navy 'A' 45-7, while challengers to the title - CR & FC 'A' had a close 14-12 win over Army 'B' and a big 54-0 win over Southern Province 'A', but suffered a 5-22 defeat at the hands of CH & FC 'A' in Group 'D'. CH 'A' also had wins over Southern Province 'A' 47-0 and Army 'B' 38-0. The biggest win at Longden Place in the Tier 1 games was seen in Group 'B' where Air Force 'A' trounced Central Province President's Sevens 67-0. The Airmen also beat CR & FC 'B' 22-17 and Havelocks 36-12. Army 'A' also won all three games in Group 'C' beating Navy 'B' 44-5, Orient Lanka Lions from Dubai 33-7 and Old Zahirians 47-0, while Orient Lanka Lions were held to a 12-all draw by Navy 'B'. Then on the University of Colombo grounds at Thurstan Road, where the Tier 2 games were worked off, Army (Diyatalawa) recorded the biggest win by defeating CR & FC under-23 by 45-0 in Group 'F'. Havelocks 'B' were held to a 14-all draw by Old Nalandians also in Tier 2 Group 'E' game, while Jawatte Lions scored a close 5-0 win over KDA in Group 'H', while losing to Air Force 'B' 7-10. Thirty-six teams are participating with games being scheduled to start today from 8.20 a.m. |
