Foster parents scheme for tsunami victimised children

by Ranga Chandrarathne

The action taken by "Shramashakthi" organisation to provide bursaries, incentives, life insurance, books and other materials for tsunami affected children must be highly appreciated", said Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka addressing the ceremony organised by the "Shramashakthi" organisation to launch a foster parents scheme for 100 children orphaned by the tsunami disaster. The program was launched with the patronage of Foster Parents Kent, England.

He said that it was the obligation of everyone to safeguard the children orphaned by tsunami and to make a future for them.

He added that a group of parents in Kent had come forward to assist the children. Shanthini Kongahage, President of the "Shramashakthi" said that 100 children were selected from the tsunami affected children and granted them foster parentship.

Under the scheme the "Shramashakthi" organisation has mediated with British Citizens of Kent County to provide the children with love and sponsor them for their clothing, school requirements, student allowances and life insurance.

Lakshman Kahawatte of Kent said the foster parent scheme was made possible by the generous and kind people of Great Britain who are dedicated to commit and support tsunami - affected children in Sri Lanka.
