by Anura Maitipe

Many Government Ministries and Departments located in Colombo will be shifted to Battaramulla at a cost of Rs. 1.4 billion within next three years, Chairman, Urban Development Authority O.S Jayaweera told the media last week.

In par with this a new railway line and boat service will also be operated to enhance transport services between Colombo and Sri Jayawardhanapura.

Necessary buildings will be built at Battaramulla under the second stage of the Sethsiripaya construction project and the project will be completed within three years.

The needed funds have already been provided by State banks jointly to implement this project, he added.

The main objective of this project is to reduce human density and traffic congestion in the Colombo city. And Colombo will be developed as one of the main commercial hubs in the region.

Over 30 Government institutions including Labour Department, Registrar General' Department, Pensions Department and Registration of Motor Vehicles Department are proposed to be relocate at Battaramulla accordingly. With the declaration of Sri Jayawardhanapura as the administrative city of Sri Lanka in 1982, over 24 Ministries and other key State institutions have already been relocated at Battaramulla during the past few years.

The UDA has also taken initiatives to construct new railway line and connecting a highway route to Battaramulla from all other directions in order to provide uninterrupted transport services to these institutions.

Meanwhile, the Chairman Land reclaimation and Development Board Somaweera Chandrasiri said, that in addition to road transportation a boat service has also been arranged by the LR&D in collaboration with a Canadian company.

This boat service will be commenced from March 2006.

And it will be operated from Battaramulla to Wellawatta and Orugoddawatta to Rajagiriya. This company expected to deploy 30 boats at preliminary stage and each boat could carry 30 passengers at once.

The boats will be available at every 30 minutes from one destination to the other.
