Over 100 boats for tsunami affected from SLRC by M. P. Muttiah Sri Lanka Red Cross Society's President Jagath Abeysinghe handed over 125 fishing boats to tsunami affected fishermen on Feb. 2 at Ratmalana. Fishermen from Colombo, Matara, Puttalam, Trincomalee and Kalutara received engines and fishing nets along with the boats that costs Rs. 300,000 each. SLRC launched a boat-manufacturing project in September last year and is earmarked to manufacture 550 boats by September this year. Taiwan Red Cross Society had granted $ 1.6 million to this project. It also includes training persons from tsunami affected families in the field of boat rearing. Abeysinghe said that these boats had been manufactured according to the standards stipulated by the Fisheries Ministry.
