Kalutara Bodhi awards to dhamma school children

by Ananda Kannangara

The Kalutara Bodhi Trust last week conducted a ceremony to coincide with the presentation of awards and certificates for Dhamma schoolchildren who were successful in the special English assessment examination held in December 2005.

The ceremony was presided by a Senior Lecturer at the Pasdun Rata College of Education Ven. Dediyawela Thilakasiri.

Speaking on behalf of the Bodhi Trust, Indradasa Hettiarachchi thanked Malanie Sinhabahu of Sri Devananda Dhamma School, Dodangoda and several other teachers for their invaluable service rendered towards the improving of English knowledge of nearly 800 less fortunate children in 25 Dhamma schools free of charge.

He emphasised that children who acquired a good knowledge of English will easily get an opportunity to continue with their studies in foreign countries as well as to find local and foreign employment opportunities.

A member of the Bodhi trust R. M. D. Bandaranayake said in addition to several welfare programs, their society also started a pilot project of teaching English in Dhamma Schools in the Kalutara district in 2004.

Malanie Sinhabahu thanked the Secretary of the Bodhi Trust Thilak de Soysa for all encouragements extended to conduct English class and said that the sole objective of commencing such a special English Language program to children free of charge was to fulfil the aspirations of school going children in the area, especially who like to learn English, but not in sound financial positions.

The first prize winner Eyoshitha Nilmini, a student of Sri Devananada Dhamma school and a pupil of Malanie Sinhabahu proposed the vote of thanks.
