The Knox Farm in Gampola provides some good examples for the best quality poultry management with the latest technology and at the same time provides broiler chicken to meet a substantial amount of the country's demand.

The Farms Pride (Pvt) Limited, which provides the Crys-bro broiler chicken to the country, comprises broiler and breeder farms, eggs hatcheries, fully equipped laboratories with full time veterinary doctors, processing and packing units.

Their broiler and breeder farmers are at Dolosbage, Nawalapitiya and Panwilathenna and the state of the art eggs hatchery in Nawalapitiya.

The processing and packing units, which use the latest technology, are in the Athgala area, seven KMs from Gampola town. The company has a good islandwide distribution network in the country.

The hygiene, environmental friendly process and the Company Chairman and Managing Director Mohamed Imitiaz's dedication and determination won ISO 9000, ISO 14001 and HSCF awards during the last few years.

The Crysbro employees in each unit are quite content with the conditions and go all out to their targets. Farms Pride also provided employment opportunities for a number of families in rural areas such as Bibile, Mahiyangana, Matale, Kekirawa, Bakamuna, Habarana, Giradurukotte, Kantale and Ipalogama.

According to Farms Pride (Pvt) Limited Chairman, they provide 1,000 chicks for each family apart from food and technical assistance and what they have to do is look after the chicks for 38 days and return them to the company and earn an income of around Rs. 15,000.

"When we give the chicks we follow up the progress and our doctors are available for any help", said the Company Chairman M. Imitiaz.

According to the Pupuressa, Panwilathenna Broiler Farm (Knox Farm) Manager Chandana Rajapakshe, the company had given them opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills on the enterprise by holding local seminars, and workshops as well as training sessions abroad. He told the Sunday Observer that almost all the employees are trained well to carry out their duties and they are happy to work there because of the quality management, which does not create unnecessary problems.

In addition to meeting the local market requirements Crysbro Management is now eying to expand their products to the international market.

The Pride Farm Head expressed concern over the foreign exchange, which the country spends to import chicken feed. He is in a process of manufacturing the country's chicken feed at Bibile.

MD Imitiaz denied any possibility of bird flue cases in the country and called upon the government to focus attention on the tax issue on the chicken industry.

He said only chicken farms have to pay a tax. Chicken could be sold at a cheaper price, if the government is ready to waive the tax, which has been forced on the industry.
