Lankem Paints awarded ISO 14001:2004 certificate

by Elmo Leonard

General Manager of Lankem Paints Ltd Ruwan T. Weerasinghe (left) receives the ISO 14001:2004 certificate from Chairman of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Dr. A. R. L. Wijesekara.

Lankem Paints "is the leading manufacturer and distributor of decorative paints in the country," according to Dr. A.R.L. Wijesekera, Chairman, Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). The SLSI chairman also said that (Lankem's) Robbialac brand of paints "is the market leader in colour tinting technology," when the company was awarded the ISO 14001:2004 Certification for Environment Management System, last week.

Lankem Paints Ltd (Lankem) General Manager, Ruwan Weeresinghe said that the ISO award, in review, was won, in recognition of the company's prevention of environment pollution by using an environmental friendly approach to minimise the generation of emissions, effluents, waste and the use of natural resources. Also, for the company's compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.

Weeresinghe also said that thus, Lankem becomes the first and only paint manufacturing company in Sri Lanka to receive such certification. Since 1984, Lankem paints has been a leading manufacturer and marketer of decorative paints, under the brand name Robbialac. The Robbialac product range comprises emulsions, enamels, weather-coat, electrometric paints, acrylics, primers, wood preservatives and ancillaries. Lankem Paints also manufacture adhesives for wood work/carpentry industry under the brand Epi Fix and holds nearly 70 percent market share in this area, the media was told.

The winning of this certification was the result of the entire factory staff's adherence to strict quality control standards, Weeresinghe said.

Spurred by this success, the company has projections of taking the industry to new heights, adding new products into the marketplace, besides other projections, Weeresinghe said.

Lankem has gone on record as being the first paint manufacturing company to receive the ISO 9001:2000 certification, in 2002, in recognition of its quality management system at the Robbialac paint factory in Ekala, Ja-Ela.

The company also claims to be the first and only company in the island to receive the Certificate for Cleaner Production, being in 2004. This award was made by the Centre for Cleaner Production and Environmental Awareness (CCPA) of SMED Sri Lanka.

Lankem Paints was the first to introduce the Colour Studio Concept "focusing on being providers of colour rather than just sellers of paints, in satisfying the needs of its customer." Lankem, then, entered into an agreement with CPS Colour of Sweden, the global leader in colour tinting technology. Lankem Paints opened its first Robbialac Colour Studio in October 2004 and has nine such studios in different parts of the country.
