Fonterra Brands to step up milk production

Fonterra Brands Lanka (Pvt) Limited owns and operates two state of the art dairy products manufacturing and packing plants in Sri Lanka. The milk powder packing plant is capable of packing over 120 MT a day.

Currently the local milk processing plant, also in Biyagama processes 15,000 litres of locally produced raw milk per day, and has plans to expand its local milk business.

The local milk processing plant manufactures a wide variety of cultured and liquid products including UHT milk, acidified milk products, set and stirred yoghurts, pasteurised milk and fruit juices.

The Waste Water Treatment Plant of Fonterra Liquid milk factory was installed and commissioned in 1996 under the supervision of a Belgium technical team to treat the factory waste water before releasing it to the environment.

The designed capacity of this plant was 75 M3 of wastewater per day. During the past four years, production volume of the plant has increased by 40%, which has brought the utilisation of the waste water treatment plant to its maximum level.

The company plans to increase its production of local milk products by 100% over the next five years, which will also increase the discharge to the Waste Water Treatment Plant. To accommodate this volume increase, the existing Waste Water Treatment Plant capacity was upgraded by using state of the art technology, including a fully automated computerised operation, at a cost of Rs. 10 million.

This plant can now handle up to 150 M3, of waste water per day, which will be treated and released to the environment ensuring that the discharge is within the Sri Lankan standards for surface water discharge.
