Spectacular Navam Perahera : The robust colours of February As usual this February the streets of Colombo were transformed into an atmosphere of festivity with over 1000 artists taking part in the spectacular Navam Perahera; undoubtedly one of the finest expositions of traditional forms of art. Beginning with the Kasa Karayas (the whip-crackers) the procession consisted of stilt-walkers, conch blowers, rhythmic dancers and drummers representing traditional dance forms from all parts of the country. The beasts of honour, however, were the elephants, decorated in magnificent finery also brought down from all round the country. Inaugurated in 1979, the perahera is conducted by the Gangarama temple every February to mark Navam Poya Day. Pix by Buddhika Weerasinghe
