Vasu promises clean city

by Anura Maitipe

Colombo city will be converted into clean city with no polythene and garbage, Mayoral candidate of the SLFP led coalition for local government elections in Colombo Municipal Council Vasudeva Nanaykara told the Sunday Observer.

Since independence except for two months the Colombo Municipal Council was ruled by the UNP. The UNP was once defeated by DR N. M. Perera the late leader of the LSSP in the late 50s, he emphasised.

However this time the UNP had made a tactical withdrawal from the race with the submission of a flawed nomination list for the up coming local Government election for Colombo Municipal Council. In fact this is not a mistake but a deliberate move by the UNP to avoid the defeat of their party in the stronghold of Colombo in the forthcoming local government poll, he pointed out.

Our victory is confirmed in the Colombo Municipal Council. And our aim is to convert Colombo into one of the best cites in the region. We have very constructive plans on our hands for garbage disposal and doing away with polythene, he promised.

We have plans to introduce some decayable packing material made out of grass and leaves instead of polythene. These materials have already been tested by small industries development authorities in Wayamba provincial council and polythene will be replaced by these locally made packing material, he added.

Garbage is a basic ingredient of carbonic fertilizer. So we will make garbage an additional revenue earner for the CMC by converting them into fertilizer and Biogas. This method has been very successfully adopted in China and India. These countries extract biogas as well as carbonic fertilizer out of garbage. In those countries biogas is one of the main sources of energy for domestic cooking, he pointed out.

With the forming of the new administration in the Colombo Municipal Council we will introduce very modern methods of garbage disposal in the CMC within a short period. In this process China and India have offered to help us, he said.
