Under-19 World Cup: Nepal in astonishing win

By Ranjan Anandappa

Nepal recorded an astonishing one wicket win over New Zealand to take the 'Plate' championship of the under-19 World Cup in the final played at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

Nepal who restricted their opponents for 204 in 49.2 overs lost their way while batting in the middle of the innings but recovered gallantly through a determined ninth wicket stand of 54 runs between Basanta Regmi and Ratan Rauniyar.

Nepal were at one stage 6 for 75 with defeat staring at them. The New Zealanders were unable to insert the pressure and Ratan Rauniyar, Prem Chaudhary and top scorer Basant Regmi batted sensibly to bring the score upto 145 for 7.

Nepal needed 45 runs off 30 balls with two wickets in hand. Nepal were helped by some sloppy fielding by New Zealand and reached the target with two balls to spare.

Earlier New Zealand batting first were helped by a useful 66 runs by vice captain Todd Astle (66). Noema Bennet (26), S. Fitagibbon (29) and R. Hira (26) to reach a modest 204.
