Colombo Swimming Club goes gay with sports gala

Colombo Swimming Club's annual sports gala with sporting events Badminton, Tennis, Table Tennis and Squash began yesterday (Saturday, February 18) and will continue till March 4 at the club complex. In addition, Swimming gala will be held on February 26 at the renovated club pool.

Wyvill Scharenguivel, the President Colombo Swimming Club at a press briefing held on Wednesday said that the five sports events will be conducted by the different controlling bodies officials and the club will do the organising parts.

All leading sportsmen and sportswomen will participate in the events. There are over 40 entries for tennis tournament, which includes junior national players, former national and public school players. Badminton is a very popular sport at present and 60 have entered for this year's tourney. Badminton and tennis are sponsored by Swedish Trading Company.

For Squash and Table Tennis, over 40 players will compete and this is sponsored by Sunpower Systems (Pvt) Ltd.

The events for the four sports will be singles, doubles, mixed doubles.

Swimming gala

Scharenguivel said that swimming gala will be worked off on February 26 at the club's 'new look' pool. Swimming, as an event has been held since 1936 and the Colombo Swimming Club pool is the second oldest pool in the country, the first being the Thomian Pool at Mount Lavinia.

Over 110 swimmers will participate in four age groups both boys and girls-under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and men and women open in the freestyle, butterfly, breast, back and individual medley. Swimming is sponsored by Elephant Lemonade (Ceylon Cold Stores).

"We might lose the pool due to proposed expansion of the Marine Drive. But, if the club does not lose the land, we will have pool going from imperial measure to metric measure," said Scharenguivel. Scharenguivel paid glowing compliment to Mohan de Silva, Club Captain - a former Thomian cricket captain and SSC cricketer who is the man behind the scores organising this sporting extravaganza single handedly.

Mohan de Silva said that the Awards Night will take place on March 4 and over 300 members and their guests will attend the function. Live music will be by X-it with Kevin and Corrine Almeida. Rukshan Perera who's on holiday from US will be making a guest appearance.

On February 26 from 2.00 p.m. onwards a jazz afternoon has been organised. Some of the finest jazz musicians in town like Natasha, Maxi Rozairo, Rukshan, Kumar, Dulip and Shiraz will perform.

All entertainments during the events is sponsored by Butani Group of Companies who have always been in the forefront in supporting the club in all activities added De Silva who is very confident that all events will be successfully completed.
