Postal service should advance with new technology Our part of the world is changing faster in technology and there is competition everywhere. The postal service in the country has to advance with new technology to compete with the private sector, said ICT Chairman Prof. V.K. Samaranayake, the chief guest at the launch of the new digital Pitney Bowes (PB) Franking Machines of the PB Company, USA. The product was launched by Brown and Company. Prof. Samaranayake said that it is very important that the two old institutions move forward together with modern technology. " Pitney Bowes are the best products of the world and that's why I am here today and don't allow all foreign products to be dumped here, Prof. Samaranayake said. PB started its business in 1903 and launched its first product in a postal metre approved by the Postal Department of the United States in 1920. PB is advancing with innovations and improving its technology. As a result PB postage metres continually optimise the postage metre by making mailing faster, easier, more cost effective and safer. PB provides large and small machines to match the size of the company and the requirements of its customers. Brown and Company has been in business for over four decades in Sri Lanka. Today, PB serves a much larger and diverse communications industry, offering a full range of innovative products and services that extend far beyond postage metres. PB now provides innovative mailing and document technologies, one-to-one marketing expertise and efficiency management services. Technically the franking machine is only a single part of a comprehensive system. It offers a series of relevant options that increase security, provides better accountability and greater efficiency in mailing. The range of PB products includes addressing systems, mail inserts, mailing systems, metres and scales which can be used by organisations sending monthly bills and other documents to a large customer base. PB also provides special solutions for document management, order fulfilment, equipment management outsourcing and improved mail security. The new E211 mailing system is a full measure mailing system with a capacity to seal, meter and stack up to 35 pieces of mail per minute. The new wide deck of the machine is designed to efficiently process large envelops up to 1/4 inch thick and it neatly handles packages and tubes with patented Surefeed tape dispensing system. (GW)
