72nd Battle of the Saints: Fine all-round display by Thisara Perera

By Ranjan Anandappa

In a match that swung vigorously from side to side the 72nd 'Battle of the Saints' between St. Joseph's and St. Peter's ended in a draw at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

The Joes were set a victory target of 165 runs in 32 overs and they were tottering at 6 for 86 when the match was called off prematurely due to bad light.

It was Josephian Thisara Perera who stole the limelight. His 92 in the first innings and the five wickets he took in the second innings which gave him a match haul of 8 for 94 that provided the platform for a probable Josephian win which had denied them since 1972. The Peterites were 218 all out on the first day and the Joes were 69 for 4 overnight.

They were quickly reduced to 71 for 5 in the morning, but Thisara Perera a member of the recently concluded Sri Lanka Under 19 World Cup team was in devastating form striking a hurricane 92 off 61 balls with seven sixes and six fours.

He gave Dimuth Karunaratne ample support to add 130 runs in 115 deliveries before Perera was out for 92 and the declaration came before lunch. Karunaratne the opener remained unbeaten on 71 with a six and four boundaries. The Peterites in their second essay was saved by a determined innings by skipper Hans Fernando who struck 64 off 87 deliveries with ten boundaries. Peterites extended their lead with another patient innings of 37 by Angelo Perera.
