Junior rowers for Asian Championships

Sri Lanka junior rowers, both boys and girls will compete at the Asian Junior Rowing Championships to be held in Singapore from July 12 to 16. In preparation for the championships, 21 oarsmen and 16 oarswomen will begin training on the Beira Waters (CRO) from next week.

Ms. Minoli Wijesinghe, Secretary, Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) said that the championships will be conducted by the Singapore Rowing Association with the blessings of the Asian Rowing Federation (ARF). All rowers participating in the championships will be either 18 years or below as at 31 December 2006 as required by the rules.

Minoli added that all events will be rowed 2000 metres (Beira Water races are 1000 metres) and the championships will be held on the Lower Seletara Reservoir in Singapore. The events to be held are Group 'A'- Junior men's scull, Junior women double sculls, Junior men's coxless pairs, Junior women coxless fours. Group 'B' - Junior women scull, Junior men's double sculls, Junior women coxless pairs, Junior men's coxless fours.

SLARA will name the coach soon and the rowers will train daily in evenings. Meanwhile they will also train in the mornings on Saturdays. There will be a series of trials before the final team is selected said Minoli.

The following oarsmen and oarswomen have been nominated by the respective schools - Dinouk Perera, Malik Asis, Devinda Fernando, Mahima Weerasinghe, Nojitha Mandawala, Oshan Weerasinghe (all of Royal College),Dathika Wickremanayake, Manil Salgadoe, Milinda Kulugammana, Rajitha Wickremasekera, Devaan Hallock, Sidath Munasinghe, Sakya Kalupathirana, Danushka Jayanetti, Indika Esankamal, Naveen Moorthy (all of S. Thomas' College). Guyan Jayaratne, Sanjeewa Abeygunawardena, Amal Wickramasinghe, Ruchira Jayathilake, Devin Karunaratne (all of Ananda College).

Sachitra Jayathilake, Naduni Perera, Uvini Atapattu, Gimani Vidanamage, Vinuri Jayasundara, Miyuru Jayathilake, Nilashika Deheragoda, Rushani Pathirana, Sarasi Paranamanna (all of Musaeus College).

Shadeena Mendis, Savani Dissanayake, Gayani Boteju, Minuri Amarasuriya, Amenthi Weerasinghe, Varunika Samarasinghe (all of Ladies College).
