SLRFU Council to meet again on suspensions

By Lal Gunesekera

Friday's Council meeting of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) to ratify the recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee to suspend three players for one year and a six-month suspension on the CH & FC, could not reach a final decision and yet another Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday (March 7) for clarification on certain matters.

The Disciplinary Committee headed by Neil Wijeratne and also comprising Metha Abeygunawardene and Saliya Udugama, handed over their report with recommendations to the Council on February 25. Three players (Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and Nalaka Weerakoddy of Kandy Sports Club and CH & FC's Milinda Jayasinghe) were recommended for one-year suspension, while CH & FC were to be suspended for six months from the day of the unsavoury incidents that occurred at the final of the Singer Professional 7's at Longden Place on January 29.

A spokesman for the SLRFU told the Sunday Observer that the Council discussed the issues pertaining to the suspensions, including the International Rugby Board (IRB) recommendations for various incidents was also taken into consideration. However, there needs clarification on certain matters and the Council are to meet again on Tuesday.

However, the Council to approach the Minister or Youth Affairs and Sports, Jeevan Kumaratunga, during the course of this week in attempts to persuade him to get approval for non nationals to qualify to represent the country. Certain countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, India, Malaysia, Arabian Gulf and even Australia and New Zealand have non-nationals representing their national side.

The IRB permits a player who continuously resides in a foreign land for a period of three years to represent that particular country.
