IBSL launches two books by Dr. Wickrema Weerasooria

by Lalin Fernandopulle

The Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) launched two books authored by Dr. Wickrema Weerasooria on Banking Law recently.

The two books titled "Banks and Banking Law in Ceylon and Banking and Cheque Law in Sri Lanka" are the most incisive and meticulously researched works of Dr.Weerasooria.

Ben Eliatamby, a member of the IBSL said the books authored by Dr. Weerasooria are masterpieces of extensive research on local and international banking.

Banking experts around the world have refered to the works of Dr. Weerasooria as a guide book for analysis and research on banking. Dr. Weerasooria achieved academic excellence at the Law College of Sri Lanka and obtained a PHD in Law at the London School of Law.

A professor in Legal Studies at the University of Monash in Australia Dr.Weerasooria has authored several books on Finance, Banking and Credit in Sri Lanka and overseas. IBSL Chairman W. A. Wijewardena said Dr. Weerasooria had not only earned fame for him but also for his country. He sought no royalty or remuneration for his work but thought whatever he learnt should be imparted freely, Wijewardena said.

He said, "It is with this spirit that Dr. Weerasooria entered the field of education in 1960 providing Legal Education to students at the Vidyodaya now known as the University of Sri Jyawardenapura.

When the IBSL started in 1964 Dr. Weerasooria was a frontier of legal education. He was student-friendly and wanted to instil among his students the vision to reach professionalism in whatever field of academy they opted to follow, Wijewardena said.

Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara said the country has 14 universities but hardly 14 books come out for a year. This is the result of poor reading which has led to shallow thinking. He said we have come to a critical moment in the history of our country where there is a severe dearth of professionals with expertise knowledge.

We will have to exit if education does not produce the calibre of people the country needs, Prof. Nanayakkara said.

Credit and Security in Ceylon, The Nattukottai Chettiar "Merchant Bankers in Ceylon and Bankers Customers are some of the books authored by Dr. Wickrema Weerasooria.
