New trend, Beach rugby

by Rikaza Hassan

The beach at Mt. Lavinia saw exhilirating action last Saturday, the 19th of March when Shums Travels celebrated their 25th year in the air travel industry with a game of beach rugby.

Twenty four teams including fellow airlines, corporate customers and other members of the air travel industry played thirty-one matches in all, in a league game, from two in the afternoon to nearly eight in the night.

The most unique feature of this event lay perhaps in the requirement that each team of five consist of three males and two females.

Over four hundred spectators braved the scorching afternoon sun and cooled down in the evening breeze to witness Sri Lankan Airlines emerge the overall winner, leaving Air Sahara runner-ups.

Shums Travel, a member of IATA (International Air Transport Association) organised and funded the spectacular event; an event they deemed to be a "unique, action packed event held for the first time in the industry."
