Beyond Borders festival

Beyond Borders is a learning and networking project for young people from five countries; Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the UK and Sri Lanka which will be held from March 28-29 at the BMICH.

It is a project of the British Council, providing a platform for young people from these countries to come together to share and address issues related to Identity, Diversity and Active Citizenship. The project involves a range of activities designed to identify and explore issues regarding social change and personal development and are developed in consultation with Young People, for Young People.

Twenty-five young people aged between 18-23 were identified as the Core Group members of the project, in Sri Lanka. These Core Group Members participated in a three day Life Skills Training Camp which enabled them to understand the importance of team working, effective communication, time management and working under difficult circumstances.

Regionally, the Core Group Members have identified Identity, Diversity and Citizenship as the themes they would continue to share ideas and experience. Under these themes Core Group Members are now working on various social development projects. Together they have identified Sexual Health Education as the common regional project.

One of the main highlights of this project is the Beyond Borders festival, where these various projects by the Sri Lankan core group members, initiated as a result of their involvement in Beyond Borders, will be showcased.

The Sri Lankan festival is scheduled to be held on March 28 and 29, at the BMICH and will consist of interactive workshops to discuss social issues ranging from Sexual Health Education to Conflict Resolution. Those present will also be able to experience the novel concept of Forum Theatre, which will be a depiction of social concerns, through interactive drama. There will also be lectures on personal development.

Anyone between the ages of 14-24, can participate in this purely educational and informative event. Participation is by registration by Saturday 25, and for more details please contact 0773067347 or email [email protected].

"Junction" - a variety concert depicting Sri Lankan culture, social exploration and pure entertainment will be a part of the festival. With performances by the Sunera Foundation, Fusion Drummers and Bathiya & Santhush, the concert will be held on March 28, at 7.30 pm at the HNB Auditorium.

This will be a truly entertaining evening. Tickets are available at the British Council.
