Talking Point : 'Sevala' crackers or pus vedili ?

Are fire crackers meant to be lit or buried? A 'Green' politician from Colombo Central ordered half a million rupees worth fire crackers last week as he was confident of victory over a case before court. He bore the full cost of the legal fees on behalf of his party as fingers were pointed at him over the lapse on his part that forced the party to seek legal redress. It was a staggering three million rupees.

His aides carried the heavy parcel of fire crackers to the location of'justice' thrice this week. But the final determination was put off twice.

On Friday, the politico, confident of victory, early morning ordered that the fire crackers be placed fifty metres away from Premadas'a statue."As the judgement comes in our favour light them", he ordered. Accordingly the fire crackers were placed in the location. The politico was at his office in the heart of Colombo Central awaiting the news of the judgement.

The 'Greens" lost the case. Before boarding his jeep to rush home, the politico said,"Tell those fellows to bury the fire crackers".

He reportedly kept his mobile phone off the entire day. The response on his land line was "Mahattaya, not at home". Another "Green" from the adjoining Kotte side quipped,"Mewa tamai Sevala weda". It was only last week the Colombo Central man threatened to kick out "Sevalayas" in the UNP.
