Heated arguments over Geneva talks

The Norwagian peace facilitators are exploring the possibilities of obtaining India's assistance to resolve the issue of disarming paramilitary groups, which has turned out to be the greatest obstacle to the talks between Sri Lanka government and the LTTE. Thinakural (TK) - 03/04)

The army in Jaffna cordoned Pointpedro and arrested 5 members of the same family yesterday. The search was carried out around 5.30 in the morning. (TK - 03/04)

'The Tamil speaking people have proved in the concluded local government polls that Trincomalee is the capital city of the combined Tamil homeland of North-East' said Trincomalee Tamil People Forum in a statement issued after local election results were announced.

The statement, signed by the President of the Forum further says: 'local election was foisted on despite appeals from the Tamil speaking people to postpone it in Trincomalee and Ampara. But the people have created a new history by overwhelmingly voting for Thamizh Arasu Katchi amidst atrocities by military and paramilitary forces and intimidations from chauvinistic elements.

As the next round of Talks are scheduled to be held in the midst of this month in Geneva, heated arguments by way of exchanging letters are said to be taking place between the Government of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission on matters relating to paramilitary groups. (VK - 03/04)

'Unless Muslims are offered to take part in the next round of talks as a separate delegation, no Muslim leader should commit her/himself to represent in the government delegation'. 'People in the South have rejected the parties that strongly and blatantly promote racism in the local polls. President Rajapakse cannot drag on the peace process. He should come forward with a clean heart to continue talks' said the LTTE political wing leader S.P.Thamilchelvan, addressing media personnel after he met with the Norwagian Special Envoy in Kilinochi yesterday. 'We shall no longer tolerate the atrocities of paramilitary groups exceeding the limits. We will not hesitate to take any action to put and end to this' warned LTTE's S.P.Thamilchelvan in Kilinochi yesterday. (SOI - 06/04)

Parents of the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) humanitarian relief workers abducted by a paramilitary group in Welikanda appealed to the government and President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday to take urgent measures for their release. (SOI - 07/04)

The President of Trincomalee Tamil People Forum and a bank officer Vanniyasingam Vigneswaran was shot dead by some unidentified gunmen in Trincomalee yesterday. Vigneswaran always voiced in support of Tamil nationalism and the Tamil people. (SOI - 08/04)
