From Lancashire with love...

by Rikaza Hassan

When the tsunami struck our shores in December 2004, it left devastated both our infrastructure and our lives. So it was with Ruvin Pieris, a visiting member and player of the Church and Oswaldtwistle Cricket Club in Lancashire, UK.

In an effort to 'do something' for those directly affected by the tsunami, he together with Don Holt, Chairman of the club and the other obliging members came upon the decision to hold a cricket match in the club grounds of which the funds earned will go towards helping rebuild the lives of those brutally affected by the tidal wave disaster.

The match was held on the 15th of July 2005 with a team of Sri Lankan League Cricket professionals playing against a visiting Melbourne team. Along with the monies collected from tickets there was also generous donations by the spectators who contributed of their own towards the worthy cause.

The funds found, Ruvin returned to Sri Lanka to find a suitable cause to present the nearly Rs. 300,000 collected when he came to hear of a modest school that was looking for help.

According to the principal of Akurala School Mr. Nimal Siriwardane, while they had got themselves a school building built, they nevertheless needed a room to store and operate the pcs. Despite lobbying politicians for nearly a year, he had been unable to get the attention of any busy politico.

The funds collected with the generous cooperation of the Church and Oswaldtwistle club were put to good use in building and furnishing a computer room for the children as well as an electricity line and fans installed. The principal and the students were very grateful, according to Ruvin, "they really needed our help."

However the generosity of the Lancashire club and its people did not end with a computer room. With the remaining funds Ruvin was also able to gift a 300 sq. ft. house to a little family that was badly in need of a proper home.
