The feel of power

Andrew - the shy guy (bass guitar)

This weird guy loves games, basket ball, wasting his time and basically sleeping whenever, wherever he can.

Andrew will blush everytime you speak to him, no matter that it does not even border on being close to a compliment. He also likes snakes and collects scorpions that never sting him in recognition of their kinship towards him. I am also told that he can be very fussy, especially when he is required to be awake.

Lahiru-the anxious guy (guitar)

Lahiru is a "worrywort who analyses every small detail through a magnifying glass." He is a tech freak who loves guitars - BC Rich, and makes funny sounds when inclined. He has a strange perspective of things and comes up with the concepts for the band.

Lahiru is also said to be "complicated", "hard to fathom" and "unconvinced" of anything you tell him until it has been proven to his satisfaction. He is also known to be "horrible when mad" at someone or something.

Givanke-the scarf guy (vocals)

This big guy is fun, loves to "have a blast", is "up to just about anything" except at practices where he turns extremely serious. He is a tattoo freak but is currently broke.

He loves his nipple piercing, his pet piranhas, bottle volleyball, beer drinking and "collecting empty bottles of booze." He wants to "do alcohol research" since he finds it "profoundly interesting." Givanke also admits to being "seriously insane" and is never seen performing without the black shawl with pink streaks at certain places, draped around him.

Viocean - the nice guy (guitar)

Viocean is a "nice guy" who likes to keep his hair shiny and moisturised with baby oil. He was called 'Viocean' because he was born in the Indian Ocean. He loves playing pool, drinking lots of beer and is "planning to get as many tattoos as possible." Recently his daddy bought him a car and he has now found a new love: speed.

Apart from cleaning his room, Viocean also makes use of Kevin as a navigator while driving since he is unable to computate "distance." He emphasises that he never "drinks and drives" and that you are more likely to die as his passenger by being run over by a truck.

Kevin - the teamaker (drums)

This real sweet guy is known to make an excellent cup o' tea and is the official cleaner of Viocean's room. He has just broken his pair of glasses for the seventh time and will welcome any donations towards replacing his one cracked lens (all his money goes towards the band).

He enjoys "hanging at home" and "fighting" with his older sister. Kevin is also active, is filled with uncontrollable laughter at times and is prone to nasty moods.

"It's about dividing yourself from society while still projecting on its madness. About showing society it's madness." Both a thought and a concept shared by five 18-year old Peterites in forming the band - Insanity.

by Rikaza Hassan

Their music lies in between "hard rock and heavy metal." "It's really about the feel of power," says Givanke. With musical influences that range from the Guns and Roses to Iron Maiden, Nevermore, Iced Earth and Judas Priest, they've already had their first original single - Realise, out in last year's Rock Company Compilation 2 cd and have three other completed tracks waiting to be recorded.

The five guys have big plans for their future, but right now are concentrating on their upcoming Advanced Level Examinations.

Once their exams are over though, they are planning to start "working like men" and get their EP out before the end of the year.

Insanity

"The initial stages" of being a band "were really tough," they tell me. "We didn't have the proper instruments. Kevin still doesn't have a drum kit. We started off with acoustic guitars, no money to practise and carrying our instruments on our backs on the way home from the recording studio."

Their undying love for what they were doing however got them from being unknown underdogs to their first performance at Rock Saturday alongside Whirlwind and Taunt, to the 'Fire Show' with Soul Skinner last August.

The tight gang of five also do not believe in they ever breaking up. "We'll break up only because Viocean fell off his back," they joke. "Our music is emotionally dark," comments Givanke. "We speak of human feelings that we don't or can't understand and make sense of it with our music."

The music they create, they love, breathe and live for is everything to them in their own individual way. "It's real and comes from the heart. It shows another person your true self," says Kevin. "The way of playing makes" Viocean feel "alive" while it runs through Andrew's body. To Givanke it is "artistry, literature, depth of thought, imaginations brought alive. It's an emotional explosion." and Lahiru finds that the music "opens" his mind.

With such depth of feeling towards their music, no wonder then that they cannot fathom the misconceptions surrounding rock and metal music. "Rock n' roll is not about war. It is about peace. It is not violence; it's emotions. You can't feel just one emotion, they're always mixed and this is what the music captures. People must understand the music before they make prejudiced judgements."

"Once a true rocker, always a rocker."

And finally they tell me that they are all "wanna-bes" who all "want to be somebody" someday by just being themselves. And that day shall come to these five jolly fellows as they complete their detested final paper exams and start their journey towards musical glory. Amen!
