Art exhibition commemorating International Women's Day

Sugandhi Edirisinghe's latest exhibition of paintings to commemorate International Women's Day was held recently at Alliance Franoise Gallery, Colombo 7. The theme of her work was based on women, and the medium of the paintings was, oil on canvas. The theme of the exhibition was 'women recognising women'. Painting has been Sugandhi's lifelong pursuit.


Sugandhi with one of her paintings titled ‘Sharing Secrets’ which she says is a phenomena common to all women irrespective of age.

Though trained, she is unencumbered by formal training and takes her inspirations from the beauty of nature, her culture and belief. Her paintings are vibrant in colour, vigorous in structure and abstract in nature. She wants the result to have sparkle and freshness.

Her work is a personal response to her life and surrounding and reflects what she has perceived. Some of Sugandhi's paintings are historic and have a religious message captured in an abstract surround, captivating the imagination in a subtle style merging the old with the new. She has travelled widely, taking in many cultural influences, which have added to her creative language.

Sugandhi is a member of Zonta Club 2 of Colombo, a part of Zonta International, which works to improve status of women worldwide.

" So far she has conducted several exhibitions including; 1979 - Group Exhibition - Once Upon a Paint Brush - Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, 1980 - Group Exhibition - Lionel wendt Art Gallery, 1981 - Group Exhibition - Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, 2001 - Joint Exhibition with Purnima Abeyratne - Lionel Wendt art Gallery, 2001 - Young Contemporaries of Sri Lanka - George Keyt Foundation - National Art Gallery, 2002 - Joint Exhibition with W. A. Ariyasena and Purnima Abeyratne at Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, 2004 - Group Exhibition - Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, 2005 - January - 3rd Biennial Women and Art, exhibition held in Sharjah, U.A.E. and 2005 - February - Exhibition at Abu Dhabi Equestrian and Golf Club, U.A.E.

Her paintings are also adored by some institutions such as the Junior Police Office Mess - Colombo, Fort, Asian International School - Colombo 5, Hatton National Bank - Head Office, Clarion Hotel - Kiribathgoda, Kelaniya and Sanhinda Elders Home - Pitakotte.

Sugandhi will be introducing young artist Nimalee Rajapakse to exhibit along with her work. Nimalee's work will also be on oils and acrylics. She is an upcoming artist whose work has been selected for many of the government based local and international exhibitions.
