Mapping coastal area in progress by Thava Sajitharan The process of mapping the Sri Lankan coastal area after the tsunami catastrophe under a project launched by the Science and Technology Ministry and funded by the Italian government is about to be completed. The project has been done using satellite system. A media conference was held in this regard at the auditorium of the Science and Technology Ministry last Friday. Minister Professor Tissa Vitharana presided at the conference. Professor E. Feruzi, head of the Italian research team and Professor Samantha Hettiarachchi of the University of Moratuwa addressed the conference on what had been done so far on the project. Professor E.Feruzi explained that the costal belt from Batticaloa to Puttalam covering 2000km2 was taken into consideration for the research. The precise 3-Dimension model of those areas have been obtained using modern technology. Asked if any visible changes caused by the tsunami in the map was observed during the research, the Professor said they could not assess such changes as they didn't have the pictures of the costal area taken before the disaster occurred. The final conclusions of the project will be delivered in June, according to him. Professor Hettiarachchi said Sri Lanka did not have the due technological facility to collect data for research of this kind. "Now that we have obtained the data through the kind cooperation of the Italian government. This will help facilitate matters", he concluded. The Italian government has granted 600,000 US dollars for the project.
